other, unsure of the others boundaries. She’ll offer to
buy the auburn a drink with a sheepish smile & a nod
to the bar ahead of them. It's only when Jane agrees
that she pauses because, ALAS, Mabel has no money.
It sends cheeks flaming in both embarrassment & anger
at herself for even OFFERING in the first place.
Hazel hues that are intent on staring at the tip of her
shoes for the rest of the night only lift when the auburn
responds & Mabel will smile, if only for a minute, before
an arm reaches to interlock with Jane’s.
'I think I like being around you, too. & to prove
that, I will save enough money to buy you a
friendship drink ! Next month, here, you & me.
